GenealogyBank Adds 17 Million Records

Recently, I came across a genealogy website called GenealogyBank. I followed some links, and ended up using it to locate the obituary of one of my relatives. Today, I learned that GenealogyBank has added 17 Million records. Unfortunately for me, those records cannot be accessed for free. I have been working on putting together my family tree in my so called “spare time”. The going is slow, mostly because I have way too many other projects right now. Another thing that is slowing me down is that I keep running into genealogy websites that appear to be free to use, … Continue reading

I Found My Grandmother!

I have been working on putting together my family tree. This is something I simply don’t have a lot of time to devote to, so I am doing it in small pieces. This week, I decided to see if I could locate information about a family member who meant a lot to me. To my surprise, I found my grandmother! I must admit, I am not an expert genealogist. If I were, I suppose I would have completed most of my family tree by now. Instead, I have scattered notes with scribbled, haphazard, portions of my family tree, and some … Continue reading

What is Android Genealogy?

Have you heard of a website called Android Genealogy? The strange name caught my attention. It is not a family tree for droids. Instead, it is a useful blog that tells information about interesting genealogy apps for genealogists who use Android devices. I happen to be a big fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The phrase “Android Genealogy” made me think of the character Lt. Commander Data. He is an android that was created by Dr. Noonian Soong, (who was a human). I guess you could say that Dr. Soong was Data’s father. Dr. Soong had an assistant named … Continue reading

Genealogy Fun – Family and Careers

Genealogy is a wonderful hobby, and thinking about family always brings up fun and interesting thoughts. At least it does for me. Today I was thinking about the work that I do, and how my career path is different than those of my ancestors. You may want to take a break from your research to think about this fun topic. First, I thought about my parents. My father is now in management, but when he first started out, he was a lineman for the same company. This means that he has an understanding of how telephones work and how to … Continue reading

Genealogy Research Can Be Confusing

Putting together your family tree can be confusing. I think this is one of the reasons why many people who are new to genealogy become frustrated. You haven’t seen the full picture of what it should look like after it all comes together. Your family tree … Continue reading

Notes From My First Time – At Genealogy

I was going through some old papers recently, and I uncovered a forgotten treasure. It appears that at some point in the past, I made an attempt to sketch out my family tree. Judging from the scattered notes, my best guess is that I got hopelessly confused from the sheer amount of data that I was given. As a dyslexic, I have difficulty with numbers, and with words that are unfamiliar to me, such as surnames. It looks like I scrawled down some notes, and then put them away, to be completed at a future date, when I figured I … Continue reading

My First Attempt At Genealogy

The very first time I tried to make a family tree was overwhelming. Part of the problem was that I come from a huge family, and it was difficult for me to figure out just where to put all those relatives. The other problem was that, at the time, I knew almost nothing about how family trees were supposed to work. Growing up, I knew that my family was much larger then the families of all my friends. I am one of four children. My mother is one of three children, and my father is one of five children. I … Continue reading

Elizabeth Warren Really Does Have Cherokee Ancestry

Elizabeth Warren is a Democrat who is a candidate running in the 2012 United States Senate election in Massachusetts. She is running against incumbent Scott Brown, who is a Republican. There have been some accusations that she used a false claim of minority status to advance her career. A genealogist has found evidence that Elizabeth Warren really does have Cherokee ancestry. For whatever reason, it has somehow become acceptable for politicians to question the heritage of the candidates who are running against them. I’m not entirely certain what they hope to achieve by these efforts, but it happens fairly frequently. … Continue reading
